5 Key Elements Of Business Brand Design When Getting Started With Canva
As we are hosting a Canva Design Masterclass this week, we thought we would share some "getting started" tips with you today.
For those of you who don't know of Canva - it is a DIY graphic design site that is simple to use, has templates you can follow if you are not a designer plus the free option is fab.
Here are the 5 things you need to establish before you should start to design.
1. Your brand colours.
If you have a professionally designed logo, you probably will have brand colours. But I know many don't or their logo is black and white meaning they don't have a portfolio of colours to draw upon. It is vital that you know what yours are so that all your designs are consistent. If you have paid for Canva, you can store brand colours within the app which is super useful, although you can always add them each time with the free version. For example, ours are bright pink, bright blue, yellow, white and black.
2. Your brand fonts
Again you should have a portfolio of fonts that you always use. Ideally, these should be a title font, a body font (the main text) and sometimes a sub heading font. You should then use these every time within all your designs.
3. A photo or photos of you
It is ideal to have a bank of photos of you at work that you can use within your graphics especially if you are visible in your business. These should be of high quality and work within your brand colours.
4. Photos that represent your brand
As well as photos of you, you should have a bank of photos that represent what you stand for. For example, if you are a sustainable beauty brand you will need photos that show your product, in colours that sit with your brand colours and show the sustainability aspect. It is fine to use these over and over again - however, it is important that they sit well within your overall look and feel.
5. A logo without a background
A professionally designed logo is important but also without a background so you are able to layer it over any design. It is a good idea to get a version with the colour reversed - for example, if your logo is black get it designed in white too so it can sit over dark photos.
This is a starting point for any design. However, there is SO MUCH MORE! The great news is we will be covering much of it in next week's class.
