You’ve spent time creating a blog post to promote your expertise, added photos and created social media posts to share it, but still aren’t getting many readers. While your current followers and peers may well click through to it - what you really need are new people to find it. New Readers = New Customers right? A great way to improve your reach organically, is through Pinterest.

Pinterest is a visual search engine - think Google with pretty pictures - that take pinners from the platform straight though to your blog post. In fact millions of people are actively using it, to look for content that you create; from teaching and advice blogs to customer generated blogs (for more info on different types of blog that you can create for your business, why not download our free How To Blog guide here). This is for all industries too, not just creative ones; think coaches, consultants, carpenters to dog walkers.

Here are some easy to action ideas to drive traffic to your blog using Pinterest.

Create Blog Header Pins

Every time you create a blog post, create a header pin using a free site like Canva. They have templates which you can adapt with your brand colours, photos and fonts. We suggest creating a number of templates that work for your brand, then you can easily create multiple header pins for every post. You could also add different photos for each template - for example if you have 5 templates and you create 5 versions of each one - you have 25 header pins for one blog post. We do this, and is partly why we drive so much traffic to our sites (Pinterest is our highest traffic source for our wedding business).

Add Header Pins To Your Blog Post

When you create a header pin for your blog post add one to the base of the blog and ask people to share it. Not only can you pin directly from your own blog this way, you are also actively encouraging other people to.

Trial Different Call To Actions On Your Header Pins

When you design header pins, consider trying different call to action titles on them. Think what would make you click on it. Use words such as The Ultimate Guide To X, 5 Reasons to do X, How to do X - it doesn’t matter if they are different titles to your actual blog post, just make sure they are still linked to the content that you have written.

Create A Blog Board

Create a special board just for your blog post header pins. This will make it easier for your audience to see more of your great work without having to trawl through all your boards.

Create Related Boards

Create boards linked to the subject matter so you can pin your header pins multiple times. For example if you have written a blog post advising people on how to care for your shoes (that you sell) create boards on shoes, fashion, celebrities, storage - all boards that your pin will relate to. The more times you can pin the image the better (aim for 10) plus if you create lots of header pins for the same blog post, that then can be shared in even more places.

Optimise Your Blog Header Pin

Once you have made a header pin for your blog, you now need to fully optimise it. The easiest and most effective way to do this is to rename the image before you upload it to Pinterest with a short description including key words. This is a habit you should get into for all SEO - images help you get found if they are clearly named rather than something like 09829.jpg.

Create Competitions and Giveaways

Competitions and giveaways can be a great way to get your content or product shared (see our blog on how to run Facebook and Instagram competitions here) so consider running one for Pinterest. Create the competition on your website then create a pin clearly highlighting the opportunity. Encourage people to share it to be in with a chance of winning.

Add A Pin It Button To Your Blog

The best way to get your blog shared on Pinterest is to add a Pin It button or a Share button to your site. Set it to appear underneath your blog post to ensure that your readers see it. In our experience asking people to share it via a Pinterest Header Image (see ours below) works better - it is so easy to forget to ask people nicely to share your content; if they like it and appreciate it then they probably will!

The most important thing to remember is that the reason you are creating blogs is to get better visibility to be found by your ideal customer or client. There is no point writing it then leaving it to linger on your website - you need to actively work to get it found on search engines such as Pinterest.
